Lot 27: Joyce Gunn-Cairns MBE - 'Richard Holloway'

After studying at Edinburgh College of Art, Joyce Gunn-Cairns began to exhibit in the late 1980s. Her paintings and drawings are intensely personal, exploring her own emotional and physical history and using her own body as a point of departure. She also produces portrait drawings, usually of friends, whom she likes to sit for her on a regular basis over a period of time. Joyce says of her portrait drawing: "I do not consider myself as a portrait artist per se, but regard the opportunity to draw people as an extension of my interest in the dynamics of human relationships. An extension of this interest is the appeal for me of drawing literary figures, an appeal which is inseparable from my love of literature." Joyce has generously donated this beautiful portrait of Richard Holloway for Art off the Rock 2006. To see more of Joyce's work, visit her gallery at the Society of Scottish Artists.
