Lot 25: Elizabeth Blackadder - 'Abyssinian Cat and Sophie'

Elizabeth Blackadder is a painter, a printmaker and the first woman to be elected to both the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Academy. After studying at the University of Edinburgh and then at Edinburgh College of Art, her initial subjects were principally landscapes, influenced by her visits to Italy, Greece and Yugoslavia, and portraits. Her later work came to be dominated by still-life, often featuring cats or flowers with a Japanese influence on their composition. Her paintings sometimes include printed or collage elements, and can be seen at the Tate Gallery and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art, as well as having appeared on a series of Royal Mail stamps. She was appointed an OBE in 1982 and promoted to DBE in 2003. Her work is collected and exhibited throughout the world and she is one of Scotland’s most famous artists. We are delighted to be able to auction this etching entitled ‘Abyssinian Cat and Sophie’ inspired by her own cats. More of Elizabeth's work can be seen at the Glasgow Print Studio.
