We are looking to create a Forth Valley family! We would like our family to feature in health promotion materials in print and online. NHS Forth Valley’s maternity services’ health promotion team is updating and improving information provision for pregnant women and families in Forth Valley and we want our ‘family’ to be recognisable to women and their families and draw their attention to the information they need. Our overall aim is to improve women’s experiences of pregnancy and childbirth in the Forth Valley area.
We want our distinctive family of friendly and easily recognisable characters to lead women through our website, our apps, leaflets and posters.
We would like our extended family/community to be multi-cultural and multi-generational with same sex family members, who could feature as parents to the new baby.
The illustrator will firstly work with us to develop the family’s characters and the roles they will ‘perform’ (for example as mother/parent/partner). There are existing national published resources, such as recommended positions for labour, to which the illustrator will be referred in order to develop the physical range of different characters’ movements, with some characters having more to do than others!
Although we are open to most illustrative styles and approaches, we do need the illustrative characters their movements to be simple. Solidly 'coloured in' figures or outlined figures with some shading to illustrate their physicality, will be of most interest. Sketchy diffuse, permeable/layered styles would probably not be right for this project.
The characters created must be clear and legible however they are produced, whether by hand or digitally as the illustrations will be digitised for a range of platforms including mobile phones.
The health board’s communications team and webmaster will advise on technical issues and an enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff group will be steering the project at every stage to ensure the illustrator is supported to achieve what we need, to get our messages and service users’ own stories across, as powerfully as possible.
We intend to be able to use our family on current as well as future campaigns.
We are seeking a recent graduate who can support delivery of this illustration commission.
We are looking for someone who can work sensitively and in a timely and efficient manner with the range of partners, and who we identify can produce work that is appealing and interesting whist sitting comfortably within NHS corporate styles and clinical environments, working with limited palettes of colour.
