Lauren Bremner

Resident Artist

Lauren Bremner is an up-and-coming young Scottish artist. Lauren’s artworks are mostly inspired by two of her great loves: nature and cats. Lauren loves to develop ideas with her studio support artists, taking inspiration from her local surroundings and landmarks, as well as landscapes further afield. Lauren has a deep connection with animals; she particularly adores cats and has created a number of artworks using imagery of cats belonging to family and friends. She mainly loves to work with acrylics, watercolour, charcoal and printmaking.

Lauren’s passion for art has also been a lifeline for her having been run over by a car aged 11. Suffering life-threatening injuries, Lauren fought back and began to build a life back for herself with her family, and in turn art, at the core of her rehabilitation.

Lauren’s strength and passion for life are evident in her determination and enthusiasm for taking on new challenges. In 2012, Lauren took part in the Children in Need Rickshaw Challenge; she teamed up with 5 other young team members to cycle a combined 400 miles in eight days, setting off from Llandudno in Wales and finishing at BBC’s Television Centre in London.

In 2011, Lauren began to exhibit her work with the support of Artlink Central. Working with professional artists Nikki Monaghan and Jacqueline Marr on the Creative Leavers programme in 2011 and 2012 - a programme supporting talented young adults to make successful transitions leaving school and supporting their creative aspirations - she got to exhibit in Edinburgh with 'Gallery on the Corner '. A favorite painting of Lauren’s from this exhibition entitled “Silver Birch” led to Lauren undertaking a commission for the chairman of NHS Forth Valley in 2013. Thereafter, Lauren began an art course at Forth Valley College.

Lauren became a permanent fixture with Artlink with 2017 when she found a dedicated studio space in the Cowane Centre which used to be on Cowane street, Stirling. In this studio space, Lauren could create artwork regularly and work with other local artists. In 2018, Lauren participated in the Open Studio event Forth Valley Art Beat.

During the 2020 nationwide lock-down, Lauren faced the challenge of working remotely. This was a highly difficult time for Lauren, however she adapted to working online with her support artist Jacqueline Marr throughout the Covid pandemic, experimenting and implementing new ways of creating art, and working with various tools and mediums. This allowed Lauren to continue exploring her creativity, whilst additionally enhancing her creative independence, having always had direct practical studio support.

In 2021 Lauren was able to return to working in her Stirling studio space, where she continued to develop her creativity and explore her art passion with the regular support of artists Jacqueline Marr, Jennifer Lapsley and Laura Newbury, as well as working on time-limited projects with other artists, such as Aya Iguchi-Sherry. 2022 has also seen Lauren participate in an art residency programme at Cove Park, supported by professional artists Annette Laing and Robyn Woolston.

With cuts to the arts sector in Scotland, Stirling council were no longer able to run the Cowane Centre as a community studio space from 2024. While the loss of tha dedicated studio space was devastating to Lauren, she was able to temporarily move into the Stirling Old Town Jail, where Artlink Central had access to a small studio space. During 2024 Lauren continued to develop her art with the support of Jennifer Lapsley, Noona Owens and Cara Fraser. There was plenty of time to work in this new studio space on Lauren’s long-held passion of painting, but also increasing opportunity to take part in other workshops with Transition Stirling at the Stirling Reuse Hub. 2024 was a time of exploration and expanding horizons for Lauren as she took part in workshops for print-making, woodworking, mosaic making, and much more. Lauren has also worked with artist Zephyra Durkin on broadening her online reach through social media.

Recycled Art at Stirling Reuse Hub

In early Spring 2025 Lauren completed a recycled art project with Noona Ownes at the Stirling Reuse Hub. This art piece was the culmination of many months work at the hub, using donated and recycled items to make a variety of projects of different styles.

The art piece Lauren created is a collection of flowers made from recycled materials such as bottle caps, PVC boards, CDs with a few arts & crafts supplies, which is on display at Stirling Reuse Hub.

Lauren designed this piece and created it with items from Stirling Reuse Hub donations and recycling banks. It was a collaborative process with other artists and staff at Stirling Reuse Hub which made a huge difference to Lauren’s practice, coming out of lock-down and many years of working one-to-one in small studios. To be in such a different environment with so many other people with an array of expertise encouraged Lauren to try new things, some well outside of her previous comfort zones.

After experimenting with woodwork, collage, sewing, mosaics and many other alternative practices, Lauren finished this project with the installation of a permanent art piece on the fence of the Reuse Hub. This colourful selection of flowers, made from recycled bottle caps, plastic boards and other small items, will stay on display for the foreseeable future beside the outdoor seating area. You can visit the Stirling Reuse Hub in Springkerse Industrial Estate, 4 Borrowmeadow Road, Stirling FK7 7UW - open Wednesday - Sunday.

Inspired by her love of Nature, Lauren selected leaves and feathers as the subject-matter. Using a paper-making deckle instead of a small screen, the prints of leaves and feathers were then transferred onto Japanese paper. Shiny gold and purple colour was chosen to contrast with the natural hand-made paper colour background.

This series of felted artworks were inspired by photographs that Lauren took of Stirling landscape. Lauren used various wet felting techniques to produce these artworks. She wanted to express the ever changing colour of the hills and sky. The felt making process made Lauren feel relaxed and she very much enjoyed the process.

This was a scene inspired by a photograph Lauren took when staying with her Grandpa one weekend. Lauren recreated the view in charcoal, allowing some flexibility to add and lift off areas of the charcoal from the paper.

The National Wallace Monument

Triptych of drypoint prints on paper, £60 each

These prints were made as part of the Stirling Landmark series. Lauren has been experimenting with a variety of printmaking techniques including intaglio – drypoint. Lauren particularly enjoys this process for the range of marks and hand drawn print quality. The dampening of paper, as part of the process, prior to print resulted in a spontaneous addition of tone and depth which Lauren celebrates.

The Pastels paintings were made using paper stencils cut from photographs. These were placed on paper, and brushed pastel technique applied to create silhouettes. The  pastel seemed the perfect medium to give an impression of the coloured sky in Castle Skyline in Spring.

During the last three days of the residency, Lauren worked with artist Robyn Woolston. Bringing together the experimentations of the previous days, as well as combining the inspiration provided by local nature and colours, the triptych celebrates the time at Cove Park. This work took much time and effort from Lauren and she is very proud of the final result. The green of the luscious vegetation surrounding Lauren’s studio and pod, the leaves used for printing and incorporated here, the blue of the sea, the red of the sunsets; all come together vigorously and joyfully in these three canvases to mark the end of what was a very meaningful experience for Lauren.
